I'm using thunderbird 3.1.15 on ubuntu 11.04 and I'm trying to add another mail account. Then a little window in the lower right of the screen says "Authentication failure while connecting to server imap.gmail.com". After that window goes away, the Google window asking for login...
Under POP and IMAP Access, select or clear the check box for Disable POP and IMAP access for all users in the domain. If you select the check box, POP and IMAP are fully disabled for all users in your domain. Users cannot access POP and IMAP settings in the Gmail interface.
Go to the Outgoing Server tab. Enable My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and Use the same settings as my incoming mail server. Go to the Advanced tab. For port settings, set Incoming server (IMAP) to 993 with SSL encryption, then set Outgoing server (SMTP) to 587 with TLS encryption. Click OK then Next when finished.

The server returned the error: The server “imap.gmail.com” cannot be contacted on port 993. Google IMAP: Could not connect to this Google IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account prefernces. Also verify that the server supports SSL.

Deleted the current user profile (in the event that it was somehow corrupted), restarted Outlook and created a new profile. Verified that it was set to connect to smtp.gmail.com, that the Outgoing Server was set to require authentication and use the same settings as the incoming server and that it was connecting via SSL over port 465.

Feb 10, 2014 · This problem has plagued me several times and each time, for days on end. None of the answers above helped. This morning however, I went into settings > mobile > then scrolled down to the mobile data for each app. Settings, mail etc were already on but I flicked any others that were off over to green too.
